Mrs. Barthelemy was a wealth of knowledge! She provided us with so much information that will be extremely important for later on in our careers. Mrs. Barthelemy helped us understand the different elements of a preparing a field trip from checking the museum before taking the students, having different materials ready for the students and chaperons to even funding for the trip. Mrs. Barthelemy was an excellent speaker that helped understand the different resources the Forth Worth Museum of Science and History provided educators of all grade levels. The seminar had a great focus on exposing students to different types of educational experiences.
We felt that this seminar was full of valuable information that a teacher could bring into their classroom. Cathy Barthelemy was a wonderful speaker and we are glad that we had the honor to meet her. What we will take away from this seminar is how we as a teacher can prepare for a class field trip before the big day! She told us to get to know our chaperones before sending our kids off with them. Also, let the chaperones know what you expect of them and what to expect on the trip. Always, always make sure that the field trip is tied to the classroom curriculum. You want the field trip to mean something to the children. We want them to experience the field trip and learn. We also learned that field trips do not always have to be outside of the classroom! The Forth Worth Museum of Science and History will come to your classroom if you have limitations and cannot come to them. we thought, “How wonderful is that!” As a teacher you can also borrow ‘loan kits’ from the museum at no cost. These kits can be made for whatever unit you are working on in the classroom and can be borrowed for up to two weeks. They are a great way for students to get the hands on learning they need as well as a firm understanding of the topic being learned. The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History truly is a wonderful place that has a lot to offer. They even offer Educator Workshops on Saturdays throughout the year! Most importantly what I took away from Cathy Barthelemy is that when it comes to field trips the skies the limit! Just because your school may not have the funding you can always find a way to have a field trip whether it be through donations, government funds, or have the field trip come to the classroom!
After attending the seminar there were a few things that we were surprised to learn about. The most obvious surprise was finally discovering what the mysterious brown ball really was. Past all of the fun that we had trying to figure out its true identity we saw that there was a deeper reason for Mrs. B to do this activity with our cadre. She showed us how important it is that your chaperons are well versed in the focus of the field trip, they can then do activities with them like the one she did with us, so that the students are able to benefit from it even more. We were also really surprised to learn about the loan kits, we never knew that the museum loaned out specialized kits for teachers to use in their classroom. Students will really benefit from the hands on experience they will get with using these kits. The final thing that we found really surprising is that there are educator workshops at the museums on various Saturdays throughout the year. Teachers can use these workshops to gain more insight into the subject they plan or teaching, and make the subject as enjoyable for the students as possible.
