Seminar Presented by: Former Interns
Hosted by: Lien Bui, Jen Bunce, and Shannon Cahill
As the Denton Cadre student teachers of the Class of 2013, this seminar was especially helpful to us as our (hopefully) first year of teaching is approaching! It was comforting to know that the former interns that spoke to us during this seminar were in our positions a year ago. It is exciting to know that all of our hard work is worth it and will soon pay off. We will have the opportunity to be in our own classrooms and to do what we love every day – to reach out and to teach our students.
From the seminar evaluations, everyone agreed that the honesty, experiences, and advices, especially about the job application and interviewing process were extremely helpful. The interns advised us to be ourselves and prepare to be flexible. This goes for all certifications – special education, ESL, bilingual, and generalist. For example, we have to be prepared to teach all subjects because we do not know what classroom we will be offered to teach in. Being overly prepared is better than not being prepared enough. Also, all teachers should work together to cater to the needs of all the students in the classroom. If you are an inclusion teacher, know what your students need and have an open communication with the special education teacher (if available), so that all teachers involved are working towards a common goal in the student(s) education.
All of the information and advice that was shared with us during this seminar was golden! We appreciate the honesty and experiences that all of the interns shared with us. Some of the important and key advices that were covered were the job application and interview process, being flexible, to be yourself, being familiar with guided reading and how to implement Daily 5 in the classroom, working together with parents, communicating with your grade-level team, advices for special education teachers, and so much more. Talking about all of these topics gave us student teachers a glimpse of what is to come and how to prepare for our first year of teaching.
